Please note that this is a 16-hour course that takes place over 4 days. The sessions will run on from April 30-May 3. There is no opportunity to re-schedule or request for a partial refund if a student cannot attend all sessions.

All 4 sessions must be attended to receive a course certificate. 

Registered students will receive login information from the instructor in advance of the class. Additionally, there is an Orientation Zoom session that you will need to attend one week before the class starts.  You will receive a meeting invite for the orientation.

Course Format

Live, Online, Instructor-led training, with a class size of 12-16 students.

Attendance and participation in all four sessions is mandatory for course completion. *Please note that If a student misses a class session, we are unable to transfer registration or provide a partial refund of the registration fees.

Course Requirements (Technology & Participation)

This course requires full face-to-face interaction and participation from both the instructor and students. In order to attend, you’ll must make sure you have the following:

  1. Computer or laptop with webcam (webcams are mandatory): This course will involve 100% on-screen interaction with your instructor and classmates, reading/viewing on-screen content like slides or videos, and interacting via typing with questions or responses. For this reason, you must have a webcam and use a full computer/laptop, and we do not permit students to attend using a tablet or cell phone.
  2. A quiet space with minimal distractions: Please plan to be fully engaged in the class, and clear your work schedule just as you would for attendance in an in-class program.

Orientation & Homework:

  • You will be required to attend an orientation session with the instructor one week before the course.
  • This course will have four short homework assignments that should take no more than 30 minutes each to complete.

Construction 101 is delivered in partnership between your local construction associations on Vancouver Island (VICA) & the Lower Mainland (VRCA) and you’ll be participating in a cohort with industry peers from across these regions

New employees, those in administrative or support roles, or anyone looking to get a broader understanding of the construction industry as a whole.

INSTRUCTOR:

Debbie Hicks, B.Sc. DSH Consulting, Kelowna, BC. With a comprehensive education background (Diploma in Business Administration, Bachelors of Science, teaching credential, and in progress MBA) learning has been at the core of her career.   As former President of the Southern Interior Construction Association in BC for 22 years, liaising with the buyers of construction services, architects, engineers and contractors in advocacy and education brings a solid base to her expertise.  In addition, her experience as the owner Rep for the construction of the new Clubhouse for the Kelowna Yacht Club has provided additional perspective. Through these experiences and teaching techniques, Debbie is able to bring both knowledge and interaction to the classroom – an ideal education environment.

CREDITS:

This course has been accredited by the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) for four (4) credits towards Gold Seal certification for in-class attendance.  

This course has been approved by BC Housing Licensing and Consumer Services (formerly Homeowners Protection Office) for sixteen (16) points towards Continued  Professional Development (CPD) for in-class attendance.

 AIBC Education Provider

This course has been approved by Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) for fifteen (15) core units towards AIBC’s Continuing Education System


Fee Includes: A comprehensive 'Construction 101' binder accompanied by a guide on the Builders' Lien Act, digital certificate upon completion.

If VRCA has to postpone or cancel courses due to insufficient enrolment, VRCA will refund the registration fee or, if possible, the attendee may choose to move to an identical session in the future.
