The information presented in this course will help you to improve your communication skills both written and oral, your negotiating skills and conflict resolution abilities alongside co-workers and on the job site every day.

AUDIENCE:

This course is intended for anyone in the construction and maintenance industry who must interact effectively and professionally with employees, subcontractors, owners, clients, engineers and employers.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completing this course, you will be able to:

• Overcome communication barriers,
• Communicate clearly using a variety of methods,
• Apply communication skills to lead a meeting,
• Define a conflict,
• Identify the stages of conflict,
• Apply assertiveness techniques to help people understand your point,
• Work with difficult behaviours more effectively,
• Describe the criteria for an effective negotiator,
• Describe how power can be used or abused in negotiation,
• Identify when to close negotiations.

Course Format & Length:

This course consists of 9 lessons of approximately 35 minutes duration each, for a total of about 5 hours of self-paced instruction. A final mark of 100% is required in order to receive a certificate of completion. This course is available online in English and French.

This course is supported by Windows, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, MAC, Safari, and smartphones. 

REGISTRATION/ENROLLMENT:

Once you register for a course, you will receive an email with instructions and a pin number within 24 hours of registration.  After which, you can begin the course at any time. Please note hours of operation in the Education department are Monday - Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.   All registrations received after hours will be processed the next business day.

CREDITS:

This course has been accredited by the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) for two (2) credits towards Gold Seal Certification upon successful completion of this course. *A final mark of 100% is required in order to receive a certificate of completion.

This course has been approved by BC Housing Licensing and Consumer Services (formerly Homeowners Protection Office) for four (4) points towards Continued  Professional Development (CPD) upon successful completion. *A final mark of 75% is required in order to receive a certificate of completion.

CANCELLATION & SUBSTITUTION POLICY: Payment is non-refundable for cancellations made within 5 business days of the course, or non-attendance on the day. Complimentary substitution of another member of your company is accepted.
