EDUCATION CALENDAR

Participants will learn skills and knowledge to estimate civil sitework construction projects and prepare a successful bid. 

Note: Attendees of the Construction Estimating course will find a significant amount of duplicated content.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Calculate work quantities from engineering drawings
• Adjust for material swell and shrink factors
• Assemble efficient crews, and determine productivity
• Put into practice effective methods for determining job costs.
• Use essential formats for clearly estimating equipment, labor, material, and other service costs related to completing a project.
• Assess and decide how a variety of physical site complexities may affect the estimated cost of a project. Use methods to counteract these variances.
• Better identify and interpret general site conditions, special conditions and technical specifications associated with sitework projects.
• Analyze projects and decide on which ones to bid
• Understand risk analysis and how to price this into a bid
• Do competitor analysis and understand how this impacts the bid
• Do client risk analysis and how to price this into bids
• Record material and other prices and maintain contact lists 
• Formulate a bid strategy 
• Understand how to prepare an estimate and the estimating process 
• Become familiar with Construction Division Codes 
• Understand how to present a bid
• Be familiar with how to use the bid depository 
• Understand the requirements for bonding and insurance 
• Understand the post-bidding process 
• Work with project managers to pass on knowledge of the bid

Please note: If you have completed the Construction Estimating course, due to significant overlapping materials we do not suggest taking this course.

Format: Two days (16 hours) of lessons with instructors plus an online portion involving research, reading and answering questions (7-8 hours) that will be marked by the instructors.

AUDIENCE:

The course is designed for those interested in becoming civil sitework estimators and for workers with experience in construction that desire to improve their knowledge of sitework estimating.

INSTRUCTOR:

Mark Waters, CTech., GSC, is the Director of Training for BGC Partners Inc. His career in the construction industry spans the past thirty years with experience and a unique perspective from both the general contracting and consulting engineering sides of the business. Mark is a Gold Seal Certified project manager and served many years in the industry as a senior project manager and estimator. His earlier career was field based, providing years of valuable experience as a project superintendent, general superintendent of field operations and surveying. Graduating with honours from the BCIT Geomatics Technicians program, Mark joined the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians Association of BC in 1997.

Note re COVID-19: VRCA is continuing to monitor the evolving impact of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and is following the advice of public health officers regarding mass gatherings. On March 13, VRCA announced its plan for events and education courses, including the Construction Leadership Forum, through April. In the event the risk associated with bringing members together continues beyond April, we may cancel or postpone additional classroom courses or events. In those instances, we will notify registrants immediately and apply flexibility to any registration changes.

CREDITS:

This course has been accredited by the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) for five (5) credits towards Gold Seal certification upon successful completion.

 

This course has been approved by Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) for fifteen (15) core units towards AIBC’s Continuing Education System

Fee Includes: All books and materials, digital certificate upon completion, complimentary Wi-Fi access, lunch, and free parking.

Cancellation & Substitution Policy: Payment is non-refundable for cancellations made within 7 business days of the course, or non-attendance on the day. Transfer to another date is not accepted. Complimentary substitution of another member of your company is accepted. 

If VRCA has to postpone or cancel courses due to insufficient enrolment, VRCA will refund the registration fee or, if possible, the attendee may choose to move to an identical session in the future.
